The Power of Human Connection - Part 3

by Vern Schellenger, CEO Contacts Count  2023

Contacts Count is dedicated to help everyone we work with unleash the power of human connection in both their professional and personal life.

Chat GPT says: Overall, the power of human connection arises from a combination of empathy, authenticity, active listening, shared values, mutual support, shared experiences, respect and acceptance, effective communication, emotional intelligence, and the investment of time and effort.

That’s a lot to unpack and may seem overwhelming at first.  The Contacts Count approach to building trust-based mutually beneficial relationships involves many of these skills and behaviors.  Here are some examples of what we do at Contacts Count that creates the possibility for the power of human connection in your life.

Investment in Time and Effort

When you do experience the power of human connection it is the result of your efforts to build a broad, diverse, open network.  That certainly takes time and effort.  Approaching each conversation with the mindset that networking and building mutually beneficial relationships is critical to your success in building your network.

Just as important is to Take a Strategic Approach - competency #4.

  • What are your goals and objectives?
  • Who are the people in your current network you need to reach out to?
  • Who are people you have identified that you would like to meet?  Where are they?  IN what ways might you be introduced to them?
  • Prepare a list of questions for each conversation..
  • Thank everyone you meet and let them know how they have helped you!

Taking a Strategic Approach will give you the best ROI for all of the time, effort and money you invest in building your networking.

Emotional Intelligence

Daniel Goldman was one of the first authors to write about Emotional Intelligence.  He identified 7 signs of strong Emotional Intelligence.  Here are 3 of those signs that are directly related to the 8 Contacts Count competencies.

1) Getting Along Well/Interest in Others

Master networkers are always thinking and acting from a perspective of teaching and giving.  Actively listening to what others have to say and thinking about how they might give back or help the other person ins some way.  People with this sign are often as comfortable talking to strangers as they are with friends. Master networkers are "seriously curious" and ready to ask thought provoking questions with anyone they meet.

2) Operating with Integrity

Individuals with high EQ are known for their trustworthiness. The goal for using the Contacts Count approach to networking is to creat trust-based mutually beneficial relationships.

3) Self-Motivated

Top performers are known for their strong desire to achieve. They have a commitment to reaching goals that benefits the group and the organization.  Building an open network is the #1 predictor of career success.  Successful people advance their careers, solve problems, and innovate with the help and support of the people they build relationships. with.
